The Billard’s Room

Selma Mansion

In the billiards room of Selma Mansion, we undertook a complete restoration of the plasterwork. All the original plaster was removed down to the lath, and we ensured the lath was securely affixed to the studs. To facilitate access to the ceiling, we constructed a “dance floor” — a scaffold system designed to elevate us to the required height.

Since this room required replastering of both the walls and ceiling, we began with the ceiling. We applied a first coat of gauging plaster to cover the lath, followed by another coat to create a smooth base. Once the base was prepared, we applied the initial coat of white finish plaster for a polished result.

Next, we moved to the walls, applying gauging plaster across their entire surface. The upper portions of the walls received an additional layer of white finish plaster. For the cornice, we crafted custom gigs and used a track system to shape the plaster precisely, ensuring it adhered securely to the structure. Once the large cornice was completed, we applied the final coat of finish plaster to the walls.

After finishing the upper walls, we removed the dance floor to complete the lower sections. The room’s fireplace featured small pillars, and the owner requested they be painted to mimic malachite, matching the green tones of the room and her malachite chessboard. The result was a harmonious blend of craftsmanship and aesthetic detail, bringing the room to life.
