True craftsmanship isn’t just about the finished product—it’s about the story, the traditions, and the tools that shape it. When we undertook the master bedroom project with a polished lime plaster finish in a rich wine-red hue, the process wasn’t just a technical exercise—it was a deep dive into centuries-old techniques passed down through generations.
The materials for this project were sourced from a Venetian plaster factory located just minutes outside the ancient city of Venice. This factory, run by the same family for close to 900 years, continues to honor traditional methods of lime plaster production and application. Their philosophy resonates deeply with my own approach to decorative finishes: preserving the integrity of history while creating something meaningful for today.
In the spring of 2022, I traveled to Venice to immerse myself in this heritage. I spent a week at the factory, not just learning their methods, but exploring how these materials were originally applied by the ancient Venetian artisans. It wasn’t just about learning how the factory recommends using their products—it was about stepping back in time to understand how these techniques were born and perfected in the heart of Venice centuries ago. That trip gave me a profound respect for the tools, materials, and the artistry behind them.
For this project, I used traditional tools—many of which have remained unchanged for generations. These tools are essential for creating the authentic, smooth, high-gloss finish that Venetian plaster is known for. Every trowel stroke connects the modern artisan to the ancients who first worked with these materials, applying them to the walls of Venetian palazzos and cathedrals.
The process isn’t fast, and it’s not meant to be. Venetian plaster demands patience, skill, and a respect for the material. It’s this commitment to tradition that ensures the final result isn’t just beautiful—it’s a timeless piece of craftsmanship.
This project was more than a job—it was an opportunity to bring the spirit of Venice into a home, to blend the past and present in a way that celebrates both. The master bedroom now carries the richness of Venetian history, with walls that radiate depth, warmth, and an unmistakable sense of luxury.
When you work with materials and methods that have stood the test of time, you create something far greater than the sum of its parts. You create a legacy. That’s the promise of Venetian plaster: a connection to a heritage of craftsmanship, beauty, and artistry that endures for centuries.
If you’re inspired by the idea of bringing this level of timeless quality to your own space, let’s talk about how we can create something truly extraordinary together.
