Selma Mansion
We started by addressing the failing plaster. After carefully removing the deteriorated material, we applied new layers, beginning with a scratch coat, followed by a white finish coat. One of the most intricate aspects of this restoration was recreating the plaster cornice. Using a template derived from the original design, we installed rails on the walls and ceiling to guide the process.
Building up the cornice involved layers of gauging plaster to achieve the correct thickness. This was followed by several passes of molding plaster, during which the template was repeatedly pulled through the fresh plaster to refine the design. The result was a smooth, flawless finish that seamlessly matched the original.
Finally, we applied the white coat of plaster to the entire room, ensuring sharp edges on the cornice and a pristine, even surface throughout.
When we consulted the original architectural drawings, we discovered plans for an elliptical design in the center of the ceiling, adorned with decorative embellishments in the corners. These details had never been completed, but the homeowner wanted to bring the original vision to life.
To ensure everyone was satisfied with the proportions, we created various-sized samples of the plaster ellipse. Once approved, the work began. In keeping with tradition, I crafted the intricate ornamental pieces by hand, using a hemp rope, a plaster bag, and a steady hand to shape the detailed designs. These elements were adhered to the ceiling before painting to guarantee proper adhesion.
The ellipse was then framed by a soft pink ceiling color, inspired by the historic Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia.
The walls presented another challenge: choosing the right color and finish. After creating nearly a dozen samples, we settled on a finish designed to look like a single piece of fabric. Using a fine plaster infused with the world’s finest mica powder, I applied the material with specialized tools to achieve a soft shimmer. Once dried, the walls exuded a subtle luminescence that enhanced the room’s elegance.
The entire process took about 2.5 months to complete. Once our work was done, the decorators stepped in to furnish the room and add artwork, transforming the space into a masterpiece worthy of Selma Mansion’s storied history.
